Administrative registers constitute valuable, yet to a large extent unexplored, sources of knowledge about human behaviour. In this paper, we discuss how register data can con-tribute to scientific progress within the field of labour market econometrics. The discussion is founded on our own experience derived from the Norwegian Frisch Centre Data-base. We argue that access to register data opens up new and challenging avenues for fu-ture research, particularly with respect to the identification and estimation of causal ef-fects. But efficient utilisation of register data requires development of new methodologi-cal approaches and new statistical- and computational techniques.
