Prosjektbeskrivelse

The project focuses on the extent to which social background and childhood events determine the adult socio-economic and economic success of individuals. Our discussion of the success of Nordic welfare policies in promoting equal opportunity and intergenerational mobility will be based on empirical studies of multi-generational longitudinal micro data from four Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) as well as from the United Kingdom and the United States. This facilitates a direct comparison of the Nordic ‘welfare states’ with the more ‘laissez-faire’-oriented Anglo-Saxon countries where impact of family background and events/incidents on adult outcomes and their implications for the intergenerational transmission mechanism can be studied under different institutional environments. The main socio-economic outcomes we will be concerned with are education, earnings, and employment. We focus not only on averages, but also on the lower tail of the outcome distribution, i.e. the marginalised/excluded individuals and groups. The sources of unequal opportunities that we focus on are those that are ‘handed out’ early in life; such as parental resources (measured by poverty, for example), family events (divorce), individual events (early unemployment experiences) neighbourhoods and health.
