Summary

Using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), this paper analysis productivity variation in Norwegian ferry transport, which constitutes an important supplement to the trunk road system along the coast. Substantial variation in productivity is found, generating a saving potential of 25 % with an input saving measure and almost 50 % with an output increasing measure. The productivity variation remains on the company level and is positively correlated with ferry size and building year.
