We examine how lifetime income, retirement age, total pension, and risk of disability and early death are linked to occupation at the age of 51. The analysis is based on almost complete lifetime income histories for all 51-year-olds who lived and worked in Norway in 2003. We document large and systematic differences in the pattern of exits from various occupations. The differences are largely explained by differences in mortality and disability. We also document large differences in income profiles. Occupations characterized by early exit from the labor market are associated with both low lifetime labor earnings and a low overall pension.
