Summary

There has been a significant increase in the flow of young people into the disability insurance program in Norway. We examine whether medicalization of the problems young people normally face may be a part of the story. We exploit geographical variation in the probability of being diagnosed with a mental health problem to analyze the effects of local «medicalization intensity» on results from primary and secondary school and on early labor market performance. Our results indicate that high medicalization intensity is associated with lower grade point averages from primary school, reduced probability of completing upper secondary education, and lower earnings in early adulthood.
